It's a service not a job

"Treat teaching as a service not as a job". I heard this from a stranger who knocked on my door. Even the minister of education couldn't have said it better.

About the soccer issue, it's true that not all of us share the pasion for soccer. I personally am not very keen about it but rather take sunday soccer as a chance to meet up. However it doesn't undermine the fact that i try my best to keep up with the team so as not to dissapoint(even though i still suck with 100% effort). I have a mild personality and so i do not have such a craving for competition and the elation of victory. I just want to have fun...=p

I think all of us appreciate Talen's efforts in organizing. Most of us just don't say it out loud. Pls don feel unappreciated.

Soccer aside, i want to share my view on how kids nowadays are crazy. It may be hard to believe but i've received love letters from 2 pri 5 girls and i have only taught them for 2 days. I'm sure we all had childish infatuations when we were young but to openly express it? And isn't the word 'love' too strong for 11 yr olds to be using?(parents and relatives aside) Even more amazing is that some teachers may be encouraging such behaviours. When i was helping out with athletics, there was this other teacher thats joining in with some p6 boys gossiping about who love who bullshit. Yes it's fun and you can build a pact with the kids etc...but what if they do something stupid? Especially with the raging hormones of this puberty age. And you can't believe the rate kids grow nowadays, some p6 boys are even approaching my height and girls looking like 16. I don't know if any of you have read this but there was this article about girls in a secondary school in JB indulging in a competition of who gets laid most by total strangers. We are talking about kids between 12 to 16. If this ever happens in Singapore, the question is should we blame the kids or adults like ourselves?

I think the primary question on our minds is the content of the letters.. Was the expression blatant or meek? And we are very interested to know your reply to them... I think your response will be vital..haha.. if u lead them on, you are in deep shit if the sch finds out.. if you reject them, you are in deeper shit coz most prob they will be heart broken and flunk the subject...then you have to answer your principal anyways...haha.. moral dilemma...

I think you should inform your HOD about this.. then follow the SOP.. coz this is a potential slippery slope..haha..

Overall, I think it makes life more interesting in school which is a good thiNG!!!! so that you won't feel so sian...

Pls update us regularly about it !! haha...

you'll never teach alone,

Good morningg Mr Teh! interesting issue you brought up. I used to think like you, and i believe many others do too; that kids these days are crazy, kids these days are growing up too fast, kids these days are so pampered etc. Truth is, time has passed and we have moved on. Our society has changed and it will continue evolving. Issues kids face these days are very much different from the time we were kids, and we have to be aware and accept that. That said, i firmly believe GOOD teachers can make a difference, at a preventive level. To hell with teachers who choose to be teachers because of the somewhat high pay (compared to us social workers heh heh) and perhaps cos they cant find jobs anywhere else. They are just wasting everyone's time and worst still destroying young lives. From your blog entries, I am sure you will be a good teacher who will inspire and and nourish young lives. In you i sense a caring, enthusiastic (trainee?) teacher who is keen to learn for the best of his students. Keep up the good work and continue entertaining us with your interesting classroom stories!

Just a question, do teachers have a Code of Ethics to adhere to or something like that?

PS: All the best for your replies to your love letters. ahea ahea!
